About Address Validation

With Address Validation, you can ensure the physical addresses of the students in the district are correct, as well as control out-of-zone [>>] student enrollment.

There are different methods available in PowerSchool SMS for validating addresses:

= Automatic Address Validation - Automatic Address Validation is where district administrators set up address ranges in PowerSchool SMS and school users are forced to validate student addresses against pre-defined address ranges.
= Using Google Maps to validate addresses. - Google Maps validation can be used instead of or with Automatic Address Validation.
= If used instead of Automatic Address Validation, users are not forced to validate addresses. They may use Google Maps when they want to check an address
= If used with Automatic Address Validation, users are forced to validate addresses and, depending on district setup, might or might not use Google maps.

Which address validation method you use depends on your district's Year-end transfer method [>>]; either the Projected School Map or the Geocode Map:

= If your district uses the Project School Map year-end transfer method, where the school that a student should attend is based on their current school and grade level, you use only Google Maps to validate student addresses [>>] and to set up district and school boundaries [>>].
= If your district uses the Geocode Map year-end transfer method, you use either Google Maps [>>] or Automatic Address Validation [>>] or a combination of both. The geocode map in PowerSchool SMS is a system of geocodes (numeric or letter codes that identify specific geographical areas) that specifies which school students should attend based on their physical address. As a District Administrator, you define a list of geocodes, assign specific address ranges to each geocode to identify geographical areas, and then assign the entry grades for each school in the district [>>]. If you opt to set up a combination of Google Maps and Automatic Address Validation, you must set up Automatic Address Validation first; how you use Google Maps depends on the options you choose for Automatic Address Validation [>>].

In-zone and out-of zone students

When your district uses Automatic Address Validation with a geocode map, students who live in the address ranges assigned to a geocode for a particular school are considered to be in-zone for that school. Students who do not live within the address ranges for the geocodes assigned to a school are considered out-of-zone for that school. Depending on your district's setup for address validation, students who are out of zone for a school may not be able to enroll in the school without district approval.
