Validate addresses with Google Maps

There a multiple ways to enter a student's address in PowerSchool SMS. Whether your district uses Automatic Address Validation or not, you may manually enter the address or select the address and then verify the address. In some districts using Automatic Address Validation, you may be forced to select addresses only.

If your district is using both Google Maps with Automatic Address Validation. See Turn on Automatic Address Validation [>>]

Validate a single address

When you validate an address in PowerSchool SMS during the enrollment of a new student or when updating a student's address, Google Maps provides a map that you can use to verify or change the address. You can also check student addresses in groups; this is called batch address validation see Validate multiple addresses [>>].

Note: To be considered currently enrolled in a school, the student must meet one of the following criteria:

= To be considered enrolled in the school's active calendar, the student must be enrolled in the school as of today. If today's date is outside the active calendar date range, then the student is considered enrolled if their enrollment date is on or between the start and end dates of the calendar.
= To be considered enrolled in the school's planning calendar, the student must be enrolled in the school as of the start date of the planning calendar.

Validate multiple addresses

You can validate addresses for groups of students using Google Maps; this is known as batch address validation. Batch address validation can be performed by the district for selected schools, and by individual schools.

Note: To use Google Maps for batch address validation, we recommend you contact Google Maps to obtain a license key that you enter into PowerSchool SMS. For further information, see Get Google Maps key for high volume [>>].

You have several options for batch address validation. You can choose to validate one of the following:

= All addresses or only addresses that have not been validated previously
= Only physical addresses
= Only mailing addresses
= Both physical and mailing addresses

Validating addresses against boundaries

When boundaries have been defined at the district or for a school, you can run a process in PowerSchool SMS to validate groups of student addresses against district boundaries, home school boundaries, or school of enrollment boundaries. For information about setting up boundaries, see Defining Address Validation boundaries [>>].
