Query run-time preferences
As a District Administrator, you determine the query run-time settings that best suit your district, including how long a query takes to run and the average execution times that determine whether a query is a Light or Medium query [>>]. Based on these settings, PowerSchool SMS gathers statistics while the query is running that determine the effect the query has on system performance. PowerSchool SMS then displays the query's system load [>>] to users [Figure 42]. A query's system load provides an indicator as to whether it is appropriate to run the query during periods of normal system usage [see Query system load definitions and descriptions: >>].
Other configurable query run-time settings include restrictions that prevent queries from running at certain times of the day (such as when users are most active in the system), the number of days that query results are kept before a re-run of the query is required, the maximum number of Medium and Heavy queries that can be queued at one time, and whether to log all query transactions or only transaction errors.
Query system load definitions and descriptions:
| =
|
Light: No effect on system performance while running. Users can run a Light query at any time. |
| =
|
Medium: System performance is slowed slightly while the query is running but this does not negatively affect users. Typically, users can run a medium query any time. Note: Until a query is run and PowerSchool SMS has gathered statistics, the query is treated as a Medium query. |
| =
|
Heavy: Significantly slows system performance while it is running. Users should run a Heavy query during low system usage times or only when the data is required immediately. |

In the Admin menu, click District Setup. The District Setup page appears. |

Under Preferences, click Advanced Query. The Advanced Query Preferences page appears. |

Enter or change information, which includes: |
| =
|
Light query completes on average in under__seconds: The maximum number of seconds a Light query [>>] can take to complete. If a query takes longer than the number entered here, but is equal to or less than the number of seconds specified for a Medium query, PowerSchool SMS considers it to be a medium query. The default is 10. |
| =
|
Medium query completes on average in under__seconds: The maximum number of seconds a Medium query [>>] can take to complete. If the query takes longer than this number, PowerSchool SMS considers it to be a Heavy query [>>]. The default is 600 |
| =
|
Number of query execution times to average: The number of query execution times PowerSchool SMS uses to determine whether a query is Light, Medium, or Heavy. The default is 10. |
| =
|
Light and medium queries time out after__minutes: The maximum execution time in minutes before a Light or Medium query times out. The default is 15. |
| =
|
Heavy queries time out after__minutes: The maximum execution time in minutes before a Heavy query times out. The default is 60. |
| =
|
Heavy queries cannot start between__and__on__: The time and day of the week when Heavy queries cannot run. The default is 7:00 AM and 4:00 PM on Weekdays. |
| =
|
To stop heavy queries from running altogether, choose 12:00 AM and 12:00 AM on Any Day. |
| =
|
To allow heavy queries to run at any time, choose the same time for both start and end. Choose any times but 12 AM and 12 AM - the value for the on field is ignored. Warning: Allowing Heavy queries to run at any time is NOT recommended because running Heavy queries can seriously affect system performance. |
| =
|
Max. number of medium jobs in queue: The maximum number of Medium queries allowed in a queue of waiting queries. All Medium queries go through a queued status check; queries over the number entered here are scheduled but are not queued until enough preceding queries have run to drop below the number entered here. The default is 20. |
| =
|
Max. number of heavy jobs in queue: The maximum number of Heavy queries allowed in a queue of waiting queries. All Heavy queries go through a queued status check; queries over the number entered here are scheduled but not queued until enough preceding queries have run to drop below the number entered here. The default is 5. |
| =
|
Keep query results for_days: The number of days PowerSchool SMS will keep query results and not require a user to re-run the query. A 'day' is 24 hours after the last time the query results were accessed by a user. The default is 6. |
| =
|
Output logging: Determines if PowerSchool SMS logs errors only or logs all query transactions. Query transactions are logged in the ART.ARTEventLog table in the PowerSchool SMS database. The default is Errors only. Note: Synchronization [>>] transactions are always logged to the ART.ARTEventLog table, regardless of the setting here. |
