Upgrading older versions of SMS
System administrators can install PowerSchool SMS version 8.0 on a system running any of the following versions of SMS:

If the district is using an older version of PowerSchool SMS or a version of Open District, contact Pearson Technical Support for help with the upgrade.
Do not install PowerSchool SMS version 8.0 if:

You are running Microsoft® SQL Server 2000. |
|
=
|
You are running Open District on an Oracle® server. PowerSchool SMS is not compatible with an Oracle database. |
|
=
|
You are using the Open District CA CSIS Database Installation. PowerSchool SMS is not compatible with an Open District SA CSIS database. |

Note: To support the changes to student contact and enrollment information, the PowerSchool SMS 8.0 installer converts affected data to the revised schema. This includes the merging of duplicate contacts into a single contact [>>], the conversion of contacts' 2-line addresses to 5-field addresses, cTools contact data to a new cTools extension schema, and Customization Data Management (CDM) status codes to cTools fields. Roles and upgrading
If you are upgrading from Open District 2.4 or an older version of PowerSchool SMS (prior to PowerSchool SMS 4.0), make sure you do not have any existing roles that match the names of the following base roles. If these roles exist, you might encounter exception errors when upgrading.
PowerSchool SMS comes with the following pre-defined base roles:

Caution: From version 4.0 onwards,PowerSchool SMS needs exclusive use of the Guest role when upgrading. During the upgrade, user accounts that cannot be assigned an appropriate role are assigned the Guest role. If you have created a role named "Guest" during the upgrade, the upgrade will fail. After the upgrade, check for any users with a Guest role and assign the proper role to them, then delete the Guest role. Do not leave users assigned to the Guest role.
