Adjusting session timeout

By default, after 20 minutes of inactivity in the system PowerSchool SMS presents the user with a session timeout dialog with the option to continue or end the session. The session timeout counts down for five minutes and the user can choose to continue the session, end the session, or do nothing. If the user does nothing, PowerSchool SMS ends the session [see Signing out >>]). You can adjust the number of minutes before the timeout dialog appears for users.

To adjust the number of minutes until the session timeout dialog is displayed:

Using a text editor (such as Notepad), open the file "Inetpub\wwwroot\PowerSchoolSMS\web.config".

Locate the following two lines in the web.config file:

First line:

<authentication mode="Forms">
<forms name=".ADUAUTH" loginUrl="User/Login.aspx" timeout="20" protection="All"></forms>

</authentication>

Second line:

<sessionState mode=... timeout="30"/>

In the first line - the Forms timeout - change "20" to the desired number of minutes.

For the sessionState timeout, change "30" to be a number of minutes that is higher than the first line.

PowerSchool SMS takes the lesser of the two numbers and uses that to calculate when to display the timeout dialog. For example, if the Forms timeout is 10 and the sessionState timeout is 15, after 10 minutes of system inactivity the session timeout dialog appears and begins to countdown for five minutes.

Save the web.config file.

Restart IIS:

Go to Start > Administrative Tools > Services.

Right click IIS Admin Service and select Restart.
