Installing Microsoft SQL Server 2008 on a Database Server

This section contains information about the installation and configuration of SQL Server 2008 on a Database Server, which is an essential component of a PowerSchool SMS system. Note: The Database Server can be the same server as that on which PowerSchool SMS is installed.

For detailed instructions on installing SQL Server 2008, go to Microsoft's MSDN SQL Server Developer Center web site (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/sqlserver/). To install SQL Server 2008, go to Microsoft's Download Center at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/.

If you are upgrading from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005, download the SQL Server 2005 installation instructions from https://support.powerschool.com, Knowledgebase ID 58059 (https://support.powerschool.com/d/58059).

Important: PowerSchool SMS runs on SQL Server 2005 SP2 and SQL Server 2008 SP2 64-bit or R2 64-bit. If a system employs SQL Server 2000, before PowerSchool SMS 8.0 can be installed, the administrator must uninstall this version of SQL Server and install SQL Server 2008. Important: PowerSchool SMS 8.0 is the last version to support SQL 2005; therefore, we recommend that you install SQL Server 2008.

Installing SQL Server 2008 involves the following:
